* { font:inherit; } LuigiAge: 3 yrsWeight: 65lbs Intake Date: 6/22/09Available: NOW!UPDATE: August 15, 2009Luigi has completed his heartworm treatment and he is now ready for his forever home.  We have also crate trained Luigi and 9 times out of 10 kennels on his own, and almost always on command.  He has come a long way in 2 months, from being banished to the back yard to being a wonderful house dog once again.Please give Luigi yet another chance for a happyand fruitful life.  After everything he has been thru, he deserves it.Luigi LOVES to play and is great with our other dogs.  He is also good in the house and enjoys a car ride or a good walk.  He is outgoing and social and would be a wonderful addition to any family.LUIGI's STORY:Luigi was returned from his adoptive family today.  They have had him since Sept 2007 but decided they no longer wanted him.  Luigi went straight to vet for a complete check up and we discovered that he is now heartworm positive. Luigi will undergo heartworm treatment in the next few weeks and will be ready for his forever home around the first to middle of August.  Check back to for updates on Luigi. Heartworm disease is preventable!!  It is VERY EXPENSIVE and is stressful on both dog and caregiver because the dogs require strict confinement for several weeks after the medicine injected into their backs to kill the adult heartworms.  Adult heartworms can grow up to 12 inches long and effect the heart and lungs.  Dogs can and have died of heartworms and while undergoing heartworm threatment.  Once treated, the dogs can return to normal doggie lives.PLEASE ALWAYS KEEP YOUR DOG ON HEARTWORM PREVENTATIVE!Luigi is sweet and loving. He was kept outsidee most of the time at his adoptive home (another breech of their adoption contract) so he is relearning house manners and kennel training.  He is learning that he sleeps in a kennel at night. It has been about 2 yrs since Luigi has been in a crate, so he is basically starting from scratch, but after a few days should be just fine.  We have to get him used to being in a crate because he must be crate rested while he undergoes heartworm treatment.  If he is not crated during the treatment he could die from pieces of the heartworms causing blockages in his body.   Luigi is great with our other dogs (all shapes and sizes) and is fine with the cat (who has grown up with dogs and doesn't run from them...)He may chase a cat that ran, in a playful, 'wanna play tag?' sorta way. He simply wants to play with everyone he meets!  He is also great with kids.  Once Luigi will be ready in about 8 weeks, once he completes his treatment and is medically released from the vet.Luigi's adoption fee is $125 (which only covers about half of his heartworm treatment.)If you would like to make a donation to help Luigi, please contact Berclair Animal Hospital at 901-685-8204.  Let them know that you are helping Luigi with Muttley Crue so the donation will be credited to the proper account.  Every little bit helps!  Even if it is just $5 or $10 dollars.
